I decided to go to the top of Mt. Cadillac in Maine to see the sunrise. It was stunning. It is the first place the sun hits the land in the USA in the morning. There were clusters of people come to watch it, but spread out in small groups--everyone was somewhat quiet in anticipation. The sky slowly lightened out over the ocean in the east. As the sun began to come up, a complete hush covered the people and we all stood staring at where the light came from. Simultaneously as the sun came over the horizon and light spilled into the land, a strong but quiet breeze came from the east, flowed around us caressing us with its cool hands. We all, as one, inhaled deeply, in anticipation of the joy. And joy it was, a quiet, deep-thinking, satisfying joy. It was the most tremendous moment I have ever experienced. Slowly, as the sun was fully up, people seemed to wake from a deep sleep; some wandered off, some began to chat in low voices. The moment was over, but the awe, majesty, and sacredness of the moment stayed with me even now, 20 years later.
