When my sister was dying of ALS and all of her sibling were spread out in 4 countries, she asked us to send her what brought us joy. I began to cultivate joys from everyday life and share them (a birdsong, pictures from a walk, music, poems, etc.). When she died in 2021, I had become adept at looking for joy but I no longer had anyone to send them to. So, I went into the dance studio with two dancers and a musician we created an evening-length work based on our own joys and shared them in performance.
In conjunction with the performance I began to offer workshops in cultivating joy that included somatic / meditative exercises, drawing, and reflecting on everyday joys. Each participant created a series of gestures/moves to express their joys and shared them.
This was the last gift my sister gave my family and I am so grateful.
I want to share my workshops in cultivating joy with more people.
